About Honister Slate Mine
Honister Slate Mine is the Lake District's most unique adventure destination, set high on Honister Pass in the heart of Borrowdale. England's last working slate mine has been transformed into a multi-activity hub offering Via Ferrata climbing routes, canyoning expeditions, mine tours and the iconic Infinity Bridge — all perched dramatically on the flanks of Fleetwith Pike at over 600 metres elevation.
The headline attraction is the Via Ferrata, available in Classic and Xtreme variants. The Classic route follows the original Victorian miners' path up the mountain face using fixed cables, iron rungs and bridges, suitable for ages 10 and up. The Xtreme route adds exposed traverses, vertical climbs, a Burma Bridge and cargo net crossings for thrill-seekers. Their canyoning experience takes groups through slate gorges with abseiling, scrambling, and water features.
What makes Honister unmissable is the combination of genuine industrial heritage and world-class adventure in an extraordinary mountain setting. The All Day Pass bundles Via Ferrata Xtreme, Infinity Bridge and canyoning into a single blockbuster day. With a well-stocked shop, café and free parking at the summit, it is one of the few Lake District attractions that delivers adrenaline and history in equal measure.
