About Coniston Boating Centre
Coniston Boating Centre is the official gateway to Coniston Water, operated by the Lake District National Park Authority from a scenic waterfront site half a mile south of Coniston village. Established to promote safe, accessible enjoyment of this five-mile lake — forever associated with Donald Campbell's speed record attempts — the centre provides boat and bike hire alongside a wealth of local knowledge.
Their hire fleet includes electric launch boats, motor boats, rowing boats, sailing dinghies, open Canadian canoes, double kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Mountain bikes are also available, giving visitors the option to combine a morning paddle with an afternoon ride through nearby Grizedale Forest. All hires include safety equipment and a thorough briefing from trained National Park staff.
Coniston Boating Centre stands out for its official status and the quality of its operation — everything from the well-maintained fleet to the knowledgeable, friendly staff reflects the National Park Authority's commitment to the lake. The sheltered launch point and relatively quiet waters make it ideal for families and first-timers, while experienced sailors appreciate the consistent winds that funnel down the Coniston valley.
