About Salty Dog Sea Kayaking
Salty Dog Sea Kayaking has been the Whitsundays' specialist kayaking operator since 1997, running guided tours and freedom kayak hire from their base at Shute Harbour. With nearly three decades of experience paddling the island-studded waters between the mainland and the Whitsunday Islands, Salty Dog offers everything from half-day turtle-spotting paddles to epic six-day expedition kayaking adventures through the archipelago.
Their half-day guided tour is ideal for beginners and families, paddling through sheltered waters with frequent stops to snorkel over coral gardens and spot sea turtles, rays, and tropical fish. The full-day island tour ventures further out to explore secluded bays and fringing reefs, with a beach lunch included. For experienced paddlers, the six-day expedition is the ultimate Whitsundays immersion — covering 80-plus kilometres through the islands, camping on remote beaches, snorkelling pristine reef systems, and exploring Whitehaven Beach at your own pace. Freedom hire kayaks are also available for self-guided adventures.
What sets Salty Dog apart is their deep local knowledge and genuine passion for the marine environment. Guides are qualified sea kayak instructors who double as naturalists, sharing insights into the reef ecology, tidal patterns, and island history that larger tour operators simply cannot match. The small group sizes (maximum 16 on guided tours) ensure a personal, unhurried experience on the water.
