About Ngilgi Cave

Ngilgi Cave is one of Western Australia's most spectacular natural attractions, located on Caves Road between Dunsborough and Yallingup in the heart of the Margaret River region. Discovered in 1899, it was the first cave in the state to be opened to visitors and remains one of the most popular underground experiences in the south-west. The cave is managed by Capes Foundation and features an extensive network of limestone chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, shawls, and delicate helictites formed over millions of years.

Visitors explore Ngilgi Cave at their own pace on a self-guided tour that winds through illuminated chambers deep beneath the surface. The recently opened Ancient Lands Experience adds an above-ground interpretive walk featuring interactive installations that share the cultural connection of the Wadandi people to this landscape, including traditional place names, seasonal knowledge, and creation stories. Allow around 90 minutes to experience both the cave and the Ancient Lands trail. For more adventurous visitors, semi-guided adventure caving options let you crawl through tight passages and explore sections beyond the regular tourist route.

What makes Ngilgi Cave stand out among the Margaret River region's many cave systems is the combination of geological spectacle, cultural depth, and accessibility. The self-guided format means families can linger at formations that fascinate them, and the interpretive signage is pitched for all ages. The Ancient Lands Experience — developed in partnership with local Wadandi knowledge holders — elevates the visit beyond a geological curiosity into a genuine cultural encounter, making Ngilgi one of the most complete cave experiences in Australia.
