About Mt Wellington Explorer Bus
The kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus is the official shuttle service to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, Hobart's iconic 1,271-metre mountain backdrop. Tasmanian-owned and operated with over 20 years of tourism industry experience, the Explorer Bus departs daily from Brooke Street Pier on Hobart's waterfront, running return summit tours and one-way shuttles 363 days a year.
The standard return tour takes approximately two hours including 30 minutes at the summit, where guests experience panoramic views stretching across Hobart, the Derwent River, Bruny Island, and the Tasman Peninsula. One-way passes are popular with mountain bikers and hikers who ride or walk down via the extensive trail network. The wheelchair-accessible buses carry mountain bikes and can accommodate groups, making the service essential infrastructure for Hobart's growing adventure tourism scene. They hold exclusive access to the mountain when Pinnacle Road closes due to snow — the only operator permitted to run during these conditions.
The Explorer Bus fills a critical gap in Hobart's outdoor activity ecosystem. Without a car, kunanyi's summit is difficult to reach, and the bus transforms the mountain from a scenic backdrop into an accessible adventure destination. Their Explorer Pass option allows unlimited rides across the day, letting visitors combine a summit visit with a mountain bike descent, a bushwalk, or a stop at the Springs cafe on the return.
