About Girdwood Mushing Company
Girdwood Mushing Company delivers an authentic Alaskan sled dog experience on the historic Iditarod Trail, departing from their base along the Seward Highway corridor near Girdwood. Operated in partnership with Iditarod mushers, the experience takes visitors on an eight-mile journey from sea level to 1,200 feet of elevation aboard rugged open-air Pinzgauer vehicles before meeting the sled dog teams that call the Chugach Mountains home.
Each three-hour tour combines scenic mountain driving with hands-on interaction — guests learn about mushing traditions, meet champion sled dogs, and take cart rides pulled by the working dog teams through alpine terrain. Tours run multiple times daily during the summer season, with departures at 9am, 1pm, and 4pm. The operation accommodates families and groups of all ages, with no special fitness or equipment required.
What sets Girdwood Mushing Company apart is the connection to competitive mushing culture. The guides are working mushers with Iditarod and Yukon Quest experience, offering firsthand stories and insights that go well beyond a typical tourist encounter. It's one of the few places in Southcentral Alaska where visitors can experience sled dog culture in a genuine mountain setting rather than a staged attraction.
