About Edge of the World
Edge of the World is an iconic independent snowboard shop located at 421B 2nd Avenue on Fernie's historic main street, just an eight-minute drive from the lifts at Fernie Alpine Resort. The brand traces its roots back to 1981, when it started as an outdoor guide service in Banner Elk, North Carolina before transitioning to snowboard retail and eventually establishing this Fernie location in 1999. Under owner Greg Barrow — a figure deeply embedded in early snowboarding culture — the shop has become something of a living museum of the sport.
Edge of the World stocks snowboards from brands that reflect their rider-first philosophy: Korua, Gentemstick, Burton, K2, Stranda, Gnu, Lib Tech, Nidecker, and Ride. The shop also carries a full skateboard lineup featuring Polar Skate, Anti-Hero, and Santa Cruz, along with lifestyle apparel and accessories. Their rental program offers snowboard packages suited to Fernie's deep powder days and challenging terrain, with staff who ride the mountain daily and can match equipment to current conditions.
What makes Edge of the World truly special is the history on the walls — the shop doubles as a snowboard museum featuring vintage and limited-edition boards from the sport's earliest days, many sourced directly from industry pioneers in the 1980s. The original EOW Snowboard Series grew to become the largest in the United States and produced multiple national champions. Open daily from 9 AM to 8 PM, this is a shop where you come for the gear and stay for the stories.
