Camping Rental Glossary

74 terms every camping, hiking, and climbing gear rental operation should know.

Tents & Shelter

Backpacking tent

Lightweight tent designed to be carried. Typical weight under 4 lbs. Most common rental category.

Car-camping tent

Larger, heavier tent designed for vehicle transport. 6-12 person common.

3-season tent

Designed for spring-summer-fall use. Not rated for heavy snow or high wind.

4-season tent

Designed for winter use with snow and wind loads. Heavier and more expensive.

Double-wall tent

Separate inner tent and rain fly. Better ventilation, lighter weight per material.

Single-wall tent

One waterproof shell. Simpler setup, often heavier.

Rain fly

Waterproof outer layer over the tent body. Determines weather protection.

Footprint

Ground cloth matched to tent shape. Protects floor from abrasion.

Vestibule

Covered area outside the tent body, under the rain fly. Gear storage.

Tent pole

Aluminum or carbon fiber rods that support the tent. Shock-corded for easy setup.

Guy line

External rope stabilising the tent in wind.

Seam tape

Waterproof tape along seams. Critical for weather protection.

Sleep Systems

Sleeping bag

Insulated bag for overnight warmth.

Temperature rating

Rated temperature for the bag (e.g. 20°F, 30°F). Rental customers should understand this relates to survival, not comfort.

Down

Bird-feather insulation. Lightest warmth-to-weight, loses insulation when wet.

Synthetic

Polyester insulation. Insulates when wet, heavier and bulkier than down.

Loft

Bag insulation thickness when fluffed. Low loft equals loss of insulation.

Sleeping pad

Insulated ground pad. Essential for warmth and comfort.

R-value

Thermal resistance rating for sleeping pads. Higher equals warmer.

Inflatable pad

Air mattress with insulation. Light, compact, warm but puncture-prone.

Closed-cell foam pad

Dense foam pad. Indestructible but bulky.

Camping pillow

Inflatable or stuffable pillow. Usually included in premium kits.

Packs & Carry

Backpacking pack

Internal-frame pack for multi-day trips. 50-80L common rental size.

Daypack

Small pack (20-35L) for day hikes.

Frame

Internal or external support structure.

Hip belt

Main weight-bearing strap on backpacks. Transfers weight from shoulders to hips.

Shoulder straps

Padded straps over shoulders. Weight distribution.

Load lifters

Small straps bringing pack closer to body.

Torso length

Key fitting measurement (C7 to iliac crest) determining pack size.

Hydration sleeve

Internal pocket for water bladder.

Top lid

Removable top compartment on larger packs.

Stuff sack

Compression bag for compressible gear (bags, clothes).

Stoves & Cooking

Canister stove

Stove running on sealed isobutane canister. Most common rental type.

Liquid fuel stove

Stove running on white gas or other liquid. Better cold-weather performance.

Integrated stove system

Stove and pot designed together (e.g. Jetboil). Efficient but specialty.

Isobutane

Fuel mixture in most canister stoves. Standard rental fuel.

White gas

Refined petroleum for liquid fuel stoves.

Windscreen

Shield around stove improving fuel efficiency in wind.

Piezo ignition

Built-in igniter. Backup matches always carried.

Pot set

Cooking pots and pans. Typically nested for pack efficiency.

Mess kit

Plates, bowls, utensils for eating.

Water filter

Removes bacteria and protozoa from water. Pump, gravity, or chemical.

Water purifier

More aggressive than filter, removes viruses too.

Climbing Gear

Harness

Body-worn gear for roped climbing. Retirement is strict by manufacturer spec.

Belay loop

Load-bearing loop on harness where belay device attaches. Structural component.

Carabiner

Metal gate clip for connecting ropes and gear. Categorised by purpose (lightweight, locking).

Locking carabiner

Carabiner with gate-locking mechanism. Used in critical applications.

ATC / belay device

Friction device for belaying a climbing partner.

Helmet

Climbing-specific helmet. Certified to UIAA or CE. Retirement at impact or age.

Rope

Climbing rope. Static or dynamic. Age, fall count, and visible wear determine retirement.

Quickdraw

Two carabiners connected by sling. Used on sport routes.

Cam / nut

Passive or active protection in trad climbing.

Sling / runner

Sewn webbing loop for anchors and extensions.

UIAA certification

Standards body for climbing gear. Products must certify for commercial use.

Service life

Manufacturer-specified maximum use period. Typically 5-10 years from first use.

Backcountry

Leave No Trace

Ethical framework for outdoor use. Seven principles.

Bear canister

Bear-resistant food storage container. Required in many protected areas.

Bear spray

Pepper spray for bear defense. Regional requirement.

Multi-tool / knife

Pocket tool for camp tasks.

Headlamp

Head-mounted LED light. Essential gear.

Trekking poles

Collapsible walking poles. Reduces joint stress on long hikes.

GPS device

Navigation GPS. Optional premium rental item.

Emergency beacon

Personal locator beacon for emergencies. Often rental option for wilderness trips.

Camp chair

Lightweight folding chair. Comfort item, common rental upsell.

Rental Operations

Kit / bundle

Pre-assembled gear package for specific trip type (weekend solo, family, expedition).

Pre-rental inspection

Per-item condition check before handoff.

Post-rental return check

Condition and completeness check at return.

Kit reconciliation

Verifying kit bundle has all expected components.

Cleaning fee

Surcharge for excessively dirty returns.

Late fee

Per-day charge for overdue returns.

Security deposit

Hold on customer payment covering potential damage.

Damage waiver

Optional customer purchase limiting liability.

Retirement

Formal removal of gear from rental rotation.

Per-asset record of rental count and repairs.
